Our special thanks to the men and women of the U.S. Navy Hospital Ship USNS Comfort
The Ella Drua and Emberá Querá are indigenous communities located at the shore lines of Gatún River. These communities are receiving technical assistance and training from the USAID/CBC Project to help develop sustainable tourism. The Project also has helped to achieve the following:
In May 2009, the USNS COMFORT arrived to Panama, during their four month tour, with the purpose of helping these communities as well as the people of Colon in their need. USAID and the USNS COMFORT Crew Members worked together with the Emberá people to build an aqueduct in Ella Drua village and improve both communities’ pier to receive tourists. The construction of the aqueduct was an extraordinary and tremendous challenge because all the construction materials (e.g. 25 sacs of cement, 200 bags of sand, stones, etc.) for the infrastructure had to be carried 50 yards uphill into the mountain. This task would have not been possible without the volunteer labor of the crew members of the USNS COMFORT. The construction of the pier was an important task for both communities since tourists need it to get on the boat to reach their villages.
Once again thanks to USAID and the USNS COMFORT for their outstanding support and for helping to accomplish these tasks.
